New Curators is a paid year-long curatorial training programme based in London for aspiring curators of contemporary art from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
Why?
We know that training to become a curator is expensive and entering the profession can be difficult. Little wonder our industry is often seen as elitist and characterised by a lack of diversity. We want to help make the contemporary art world more accessible and equitable because we believe this will make it richer and more relevant.
By offering an intensive twelve-month curatorial training and London Living Wage to 10-12 people from lower socio-economic backgrounds globally each year we will help diversify the curatorial profession.
* The London Living Wage is £13.15/hour (£25,644 gross per year).
What?
Our course is designed to equip aspiring curators of contemporary art with the knowledge, practical skills, networks and confidence needed to thrive in the art world.
The programme is divided into five strands:
Academic seminars
in curatorial theory and practice, and art history
Skills training
covering essential topics such as writing for different audiences, public speaking, budgeting and fundraising
Network development
meetings with a wide range of curators, artists and arts professionals and regular studio, gallery and museum visits in the UK and internationally
Exhibition-making
extensive practical experience working collaboratively on contemporary art exhibitions, publications and public programmes
Coaching and mentorship
fellows are mentored and have access to regular coaching sessions

Where?
New Curators is physically located at the South London Gallery in Camberwell and Peckham. The South London Gallery will present the first exhibition curated by the 2023-4 Curatorial Fellows in Summer 2024.

New Curators has strict eligibility criteria so please do not proceed with your application until you have confirmed you are eligible.
Please complete the UK Application Form if you already have the right to live and work in the UK, irrespective of where you were born.
Please complete the International Application Form if you require a visa to live and work in the UK. Please note, New Curators is only able to assist with the Tier 5 GAE visa and our visa sponsor requires applicants to have a degree awarded after January 2023 or be currently enrolled on a degree-level course (BA or MA).
